Former House Speaker: If it’s clear next October that we can create a national movement that would be like the Contract With America, then I’d be interested in running. What really matters is to recognize that the challenge of the next 20 years is the biggest challenge we’ve had as a country since April 1861. We do not realize how hard it’s going to be. So I’m going to spend from now until October of ‘07 laying out a series of policies and a strategy for winning the future. I’m really going to be focused on the notion of trying to create a grass-roots movement that would radically change Washington, not just preside over it.

The fact that it’s been such a controversy underscores the way in which we’ve begun to think that the whole purpose of a memorial is just to make the families of those who died feel better. And in fact, that’s not the most important point–that’s not the reason the memorial exists. A successful memorial allows a wide range of people who have different experiences, sensibilities and temperaments feel a common sense of awe and emotion as they look back at an event.
