If convicted, Dakota Allen, 20, Robert Castaneda, 21, and Trace Ellison, 18, could face two to 20 years in prison.
The three are accused of breaking into the home between Dec. 20 and Jan. 9, during Texas Tech’s semester break, and stealing a gun safe containing seven handguns and long guns, two digital cameras and a TV. The stolen items were valued at $14,000, according to The Associated Press.
All three were dismissed from the team May 5 for failing to uphold student-athlete expectations, Texas Tech officials said.

Allen, a 6-2, 224-pound linebacker who would’ve been a sophomore this season, was the Red Raiders’ top returning tackler. Castaneda (6-4, 296 pounds) would’ve been a sophomore offensive lineman, and Ellison (6-4, 294), also an offensive lineman, would’ve been a redshirt freshman.
